How JOEY works

Setup: 6 steps, in order

  1. Sign up, which means choosing your membership. You pick the plan, you create the

account, and that is one step, not two. Every plan includes the full JOEY system.

  1. Onboarding, then approval. You tell JOEY your name, your tone (direct, friendly,

professional), your signoff, and the schedule you want JOEY to work. Approval can take minutes.

  1. Choose your mode of operation. See the note below; the two modes are the JOEY Virtual

Machine (VPS) and the Chrome extension.

  1. You enter your own credentials and secrets. You type your CRM login yourself, directly

into the VPS through the remote viewing tool, or into the extension's credentials vault. Nobody on our side types them in for you.

  1. JOEY kicks off on your schedule. JOEY starts at the time you set during onboarding. You

do not have to launch it each morning.

  1. You control everything from the JOEY dashboard. The dashboard is the control room: JOEY

aggressiveness, the auto dialer, and the rest of your settings. Changes take effect live.

Your mode of operation, and a genuine discrepancy in our own materials

JOEY has two possible modes: the JOEY Virtual Machine (VPS), hosted hardware set aside for your account, and the Chrome extension, which runs inside Chrome on your own computer. The comparison table that ships with the download page describes both as live options today, including the extension as "included free on every plan" and able to run alongside the VPS as a mutual fallback.

The settings screen that actually lets you pick a mode disagrees with that framing. Its own code comment, dated 2026-07-23, states plainly: "JOEY Virtual Machine (VPS) is the default and the only mode a dealer can actively pick from this screen", and shows the extension option as a disabled "Coming soon" chip. The two dedicated help pages for each mode (/help/extension and /help/vps) both carry the identical sentence: "JOEY Virtual Machine is the mode of operation available today. The extension is a second way in."

What is true either way, confirmed by the extension's own install page: the Chrome extension is a real, downloadable, working build (v0.7.2, a live 118,897-byte .zip) that reads your DriveCentric conversations and prepares drafts, a call script, a text and an email, for you to review and send yourself. What it does not yet do is run as the account's primary automated sending mode from the settings screen, which is reserved for the VPS today. Treat the extension as a companion drafting tool you can install and use right now, and the VPS as the mode that actually runs the automated outreach described in the rest of this page. See Setup: the Chrome extension and Setup: run mode (VPS) for the install steps for each.

Your daily flow with JOEY

You come in to work. JOEY organizes around your schedule and stops working when you start, and turns itself off at the end time you set.

  • You just come in to work. JOEY organizes itself around your schedule.
  • A recommended (not required) practice: set the schedule about 15 minutes after you arrive, to

absorb the days you run a little late.

  • Check the work JOEY did in your CRM workplan or history page, or the JOEY dashboard.
  • Control the aggression dial and other dashboard controls live, while JOEY is working.
  • Turn the auto dialer on and off as you need it, for example off when a customer is at your

desk.

  • JOEY turns itself off at the end time you set. Nothing to remember at close.

Two further details worth knowing:

  • 120-second reply window (configurable). When a lead replies, you get 120 seconds to jump

in and answer personally. If you do not respond in that window, JOEY sends a contextual reply for you.

  • Pause in one click. Press Stop from the dashboard to pause all outbound activity

instantly. Press Start again to resume right where JOEY left off.

The First Contact Ritual

Every new lead triggers a 6-step ritual that runs automatically, in order, within minutes.

  1. Leave the first CRM note. For instant cash offer (ICO) leads, JOEY extracts the vehicle

details, offer amount and customer info from the KBB link and logs it to the knowledgebase. For sales leads it logs the inquiry details.

  1. Lock-in note. A second internal note signals that JOEY owns this lead, preventing

double-outreach if another salesperson or system touches the same lead.

  1. Compliance opt-in text. JOEY sends the required TCPA opt-in text: "May I text you? Reply

YES to confirm." No further texts go out until the customer replies YES.

  1. Personalized first email. Built from the data extracted in step 1: the customer's name,

their specific vehicle, the real offer amount, not a blank template.

  1. Call routed to your phone. The lead calls you instead of you chasing them. If you miss

it, JOEY leaves a voicemail and logs the call in the CRM. Desk phone or mobile routing is configurable.

  1. Final note: "send video now." This is your only task in the ritual. A quick personalized

video is the highest-converting touch you can make; JOEY sets everything else up.

The Reactivator

Most leads do not buy on day one. The Reactivator is JOEY's lead re-engagement engine, mining your existing pipeline and keeping leads warm until they are ready to move. Default touch frequency by lead type:

  • ICO leads: 2 touches per day
  • Buying and selling leads: 3 touches per day
  • Cold or aged leads: as low as 1 touch per day, configurable
  • Active hot leads: up to 5 touches per day, configurable

You can adjust it with per-lead-type sliders, or with a plain text instruction like "contact ICO leads twice a day, buying leads three times, no weekends." Quiet hours are always respected regardless of frequency settings, and opt-out leads are permanently removed from all outreach the moment they reply STOP.

The CRM Auto Dialer

Turn the auto dialer on from your dashboard when you want calls. JOEY works through your lead list and routes each call directly to you, one by one.

  • Dials leads one by one in priority order, routing each call to your desk phone or mobile.
  • Detects if you are still on a call and waits before starting the next dial, so calls never

overlap.

  • Configurable interval between calls; default is one new lead call per minute.
  • Default outcome on no answer: leave a voicemail and log the call automatically.
  • A "Start conversation" mode logs the call and leaves a CRM note automatically when a lead

picks up, so you can focus on talking.

See Setup: run mode (VPS) and the migrated Autodialer Queue article for pacing, quiet-hours enforcement and who controls the dialer's settings.

Conversational AI, not templates

This is the technical difference between JOEY and a template-based follow-up tool. Carriers and spam filters flag identical messages sent to thousands of leads from the same number as bulk commercial traffic. JOEY writes each message from scratch with a current-generation language model, in the tone you set during onboarding, referencing the actual vehicle the lead asked about and the prior conversation history. TCPA opt-in is step 3 of every first contact, quiet hours are always respected, and an opt-out is processed immediately and permanently.

20+ phases

JOEY runs on a phase engine. Each phase is a distinct type of outreach or action: first contact and opt-in, reactivation, trade-in follow-up, the ICO ritual, service-to-sales conversion, unsold-show follow-up, and more. Phases run in sequence and in parallel based on your lead list. Which phases run, and how often, is configurable from your dashboard. A Phase Marketplace, where top-performing salespeople could publish and earn from their own custom phases, is described in the product as coming soon and is not built today.
